Why do people get high blood pressure?

Patient's question:

I used to have low blood pressure and couldn't tolerate being too hungry—when I got hungry, I would feel dizzy and see black spots. This morning, when I went to bed, I felt dizzy again, and when I measured my blood pressure, it was high. Please help me understand what's going on—why did I go from low blood pressure to high blood pressure?

Doctor's answer:

The blood pressure of the human body fluctuates constantly and can be affected by various factors, such as recent fatigue or emotional excitement, or a cold, all of which may impact blood pressure. I am in a temporary state of elevated blood pressure, which does not qualify as hypertension. Therefore, multiple measurements are needed—each blood pressure reading must be below normal to be diagnosed as hypertension, at which point treatment may be required. If you often experience dark circles or a feeling of dimness in your eyes, you should pay attention to regular activity patterns, which can help stabilize this condition.
