Features: This book demonstrates how to modernize legacy systems incrementally. It uses and extends the methods and techniques described in "Building Systems with Commercial Components," applying engineering expertise early in the conceptual phase to ensure the development of realistic and comprehensive plans. The book particularly describes an extensive case study involving a significant modernization effort. The legacy system in this case study consists of nearly 2 million lines of COBOL code, which has been developed for over 30 years. A modern system based on the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) architecture is being built to replace it. Chapter 1 introduces the challenges and practices of software evolution. Chapter 2 introduces the main case study in this book. Chapter 3 introduces the modernization approach to risk management. Chapters 4-17 elaborate on this approach in detail and explain it through the case study. Chapter 18 offers some recommendations to guide modernization efforts. Throughout the book, we use the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to represent architecture diagrams and design patterns.
