Features: The original version of The Illustrations of Chen Taijiquan was divided into four volumes: Preface, Volume 1, Volume 2, and Volume 3. In subsequent reprints and editions, some combined the four volumes into a single book. The content of the book can be summarized into four parts: First, the practice methods of the 64 postures of Chen Taijiquan. This part accounts for the most pages and is the main content of Volumes 1, 2, and 3. Second, the basic theory of Taijiquan. This part includes not only four illustrations and texts in the preface that explain the integration of Taijiquan and the I Ching, and 11 Taijiquan essays such as The Taijiquan Canon, but also the principles and techniques embedded in the illustrations of the 64 postures. Third, the cultural foundation of Taijiquan. This part is primarily concentrated in the preface, including 40 illustrations introducing I Ching knowledge and 12 charts and songs about the meridians and acupoints of the human body. Fourth, the development of Chen Taijiquan and reviews by contemporaries. This includes the preface's Preface to the Taijiquan Canon by Chen Panling of Xiping (Hua), the preface's preface by Li Shican (Minxiu) of Weixian, the preface's preface by Du Yan, and the author Chen Xin's preface; the appendix's Chen Clan Genealogy (excerpts after Chen Wangting), Biography of Chen Yingyi, Biography of Chen Zhongshen, Epitaph for Chen of Wen County, Li Chunxi's postscript, and Liu Huandong's postscript; and Du Yuanyhua (Yuwang) added Du Yuanyhua's Account of Jiang Fa's Transmission from Shanxi as a supplementary note. Through extensive reading, we find that Chen Xin's The Illustrations of Chen Taijiquan is a comprehensive monograph introducing the history, theory, techniques, and related knowledge of Chen Taijiquan. The book is characterized by detailed illustrations, the fusion of techniques and theory, concise instructions, and broad applicability.
Detailed illustrations are a key feature of The Illustrations of Chen Taijiquan. The book presents its content in the form of illustrations, connecting I Ching diagrams with I Ching theory. The fusion of techniques and theory is the second feature. The book collects the author's Taijiquan essays in the preface, introducing the I Ching theory and traditional Chinese medicine meridian knowledge as the cultural foundation of Taijiquan. Concise instructions are the third feature. The author often uses songs, rhymes, and colloquial language to explain Taijiquan theory and technical key points. Broad applicability is the fourth feature. The book is rich in knowledge, making it beneficial for all martial arts practitioners. As a specialized and renowned work on Chen Taijiquan, it helps dedicated practitioners quickly understand the origins and overview of their style, as well as master its techniques and principles. For those who practice other styles or multiple Taijiquan forms, reading this book can deepen their understanding of Taijiquan's common characteristics and fundamental rules, and help them identify the similarities and differences between Chen Taijiquan and other styles, allowing them to develop unique features of other frames while preserving Taijiquan's core elements. Even practitioners and enthusiasts of other martial arts, as well as researchers, can benefit from this book. First, they can use it to learn about Chen Taijiquan and absorb its essence to enrich their own practice. Second, they can draw inspiration from the book's compilation style and expression methods to refine their own martial arts. Third, they can compare the book from the perspective of overall martial arts or a specific style to gain deeper insights and broaden their horizons.
