Is a sweet mouth a sign of diabetes?

Patient's question:

These past few days, when I take naps in the afternoon, I often feel my mouth is dry in the middle of the night. Sometimes, my mouth also feels sweet without any reason, and I haven't eaten sugar or drunk sugary drinks before taking my nap. I don't know if this sudden sweetness in my mouth could be a sign of diabetes?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, based on the situation you described, it cannot be concluded that it is diabetes just from the observation of sweetness in the mouth, as saliva excretion itself is naturally sweet. If you have diabetes, there would be obvious symptoms of "three more and one less" (more thirst, more urination, more hunger, and weight loss). It is better to check your fasting blood glucose. Under normal circumstances, fasting blood glucose should be between 3.1 and 6.1. If it exceeds 6.1, this indicates elevated blood sugar, which would require attention to dietary control.
