In botanical classification, peony belongs to the Ranunculaceae family, a deciduous small shrub with a height of 1-1.5 meters. It has bipinnately compound leaves with 3-5 lobed small leaves. Peonies bloom in early April or early May of the second year after planting. Peonies have large flower shapes, a variety of colors, and unique leaves. After long cultivation, new varieties have been bred. They are not only renowned ornamental plants but also have medicinal value. The bark and roots of peonies are a highly effective traditional Chinese medicine called "Moutan." Peonies have numerous varieties, which can be divided into five types based on growth habits: dwarf, spreading, loose, upright, and single-stemmed.

- Spreading type: Upright and slightly oblique.
- Loose type: Curved branches, gracefully flowing.
- Upright type: Straight upward growth, elegant and poised.
- Single-stemmed type: Distinct main trunk, resembling a tree.
By comparing the characteristics of different peony varieties, through extensive sketches and observations, one can gain a deeper understanding of their unique features. Consulting with flower cultivation experts further enhances this knowledge, leading to a more comprehensive and profound rational understanding of peonies.
