Does diabetes cause leg pain?

Patient's question:

My uncle has been experiencing severe leg pain recently and can no longer walk without a cane. He hasn't been injured, but he does have diabetes. Will diabetes cause leg pain?

Doctor's answer:

Currently, there is no cure for diabetes, but it can be well controlled through various treatment methods. Patients with diabetes may develop diabetic foot complications, but in such cases, there is usually a history of trauma. The long-term high blood sugar associated with diabetes can lead to chronic damage and dysfunction in various organs, particularly the eyes, kidneys, heart, blood vessels, and nerves. If the condition is solely limited to the legs, it is generally not strongly related to diabetes, and one should consider whether it could be caused by inflammation of the lumbar spine compressing the nerves or other conditions such as varicose veins.
