What is steroid-induced diabetes?

Patient's question:

My father is 48 years old. Recently, during a check-up, it was found that his steroid levels were relatively high. The doctor advised him to be cautious about steroid-induced diabetes. So, I would like to ask what is steroid-induced diabetes?

Doctor's answer:

Steroid diabetes is a special type of glucose metabolism disorder syndrome, which is caused by the enhanced excretion of endogenous adrenal cortical hormones or the secondary diabetes induced by exogenous use of glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids essentially possess steroid-like effects, primarily inhibiting autoimmune shock and toxicity, and are widely used in clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, their therapeutic effects are inevitably accompanied by many adverse reactions. Abnormal blood sugar levels are a common occurrence. If not treated promptly, it can easily lead to complications of the primary disease, secondary neuron transmission, and even severe acute complications or recurrence.
