Is a kidney cyst a kidney disease?

Patient's question:

Sometimes, after giving birth, I only found out that I had hemorrhoids. Now my body has a kidney cyst. Is a kidney cyst a kidney disease?

Doctor's answer:

Kidney cysts are the most common structural abnormalities in adult kidneys. They can be unilateral or bilateral and are generally about 2 cm in diameter, although some can be as large as 10 cm. They are more common in men. The incidence rate increases with age. Simple kidney cysts are usually asymptomatic. Only when the cyst causes vascular congestion or urinary tract obstruction may there be additional symptoms, which can affect kidney function. When the cyst is smaller than 5 cm, appropriate treatment should be implemented, including cyst aspiration, intracystic anesthesia with sclerosing agents, or surgical treatment.
