The author traces the lives of numerous scholars who studied Homer's epics from the Renaissance to the modern era. This book opens a path for readers to delve deeply into the origins of Western culture. Homer's epics are hailed as the most beautiful in the world, a classic of Western literature, and at the same time, an eternal mystery. For centuries, people have continuously explored this legendary work, trying to unravel the mysteries it contains: Who was Homer? Did the Trojan War actually take place? If it did, was it because of the beautiful Helen or for other reasons? Where was Troy located? And about the legendary Odysseus—was he real? Where did he travel? What was the magical world of gods like? Among the many collections of Homeric studies, we recommend The World of Homer. The author uses rich and detailed materials to reveal the mysteries of the Homeric world. At the same time, he explains how Homer described the early form of Greek democracy, portrayed the lives of free people and slaves and their relationships, reflected the relationship between "civilized" Greeks and "barbarians," and depicted their relationship with the gods. The author also explores how Homer's epics influenced the works of writers and artists from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, from Shakespeare's time to the present, and why Westerners consider Homer's epics a must-read textbook. He also explains how they transformed the Homeric world into a living ideal.
