Publish Date: 2006-02-01
Features: Intonation is an important linguistic phenomenon in verbal communication, encompassing rich linguistic, paralinguistic, and non-linguistic information. In this book, the author primarily discusses the main issues remaining in the phonological research of English and Chinese intonation from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. On this basis, the author proposes their own insights into the structure and representation of English and Chinese intonation phonology, and systematically compares their similarities and differences.
Given the different research statuses of English and Chinese intonation phonology, this book adopts distinct research methods for each. The study of English intonation primarily focuses on modifying the existing English intonation representation system through theoretical analysis combined with observations of actual linguistic data. The research on Chinese intonation, on the other hand, explores the main issues in current studies through phonetic experiments, auditory discrimination experiments, and corpus observations.
The systematic structural conclusions of English and Chinese intonation, particularly the acoustic manifestations of Chinese high events, advance the in-depth study of English and Chinese intonation and offer certain reference significance for intonation teaching and speech engineering.
