Author: Xu Ziqi (Qing Dynasty) compiled, Wang Chongwu annotated and proofread
Publisher:
Publication Date: 1957-05-01
Features:
1. This book is based on the original 1861 (Xianfeng 11th Year) edition, with reference to the 1878 (Guangxu 4th Year) Beijing Longwei Pavilion edition and the 1886 (Guangxu 12th Year) lead-printed edition from the Japanese Chinese Embassy.
2. The book adopts a topical outline format, with subheadings indented one level lower. This style is retained as is. The author's conclusions are now formatted in smaller font, indented two levels lower, for clarity. Original spacing or separate line formatting for Qing emperors' names has been adjusted for continuity.
3. The original text avoided Qing emperors' names by substituting characters such as "Yong" with "Rong," "Xuan" with "Yuan," "Yin" with "Yun," and "Hong" with "Hong." Additionally, the author altered certain words critical of the Manchus, such as changing "Yi" to "Yi" or "Yi," "Xu" to "Lu," and "Hu" to "Hu," in accordance with contemporary regulations. Old derogatory terms for ethnic minorities, such as "Huihui" to "Jingjing," and "Luolu" to "Lulu," have been uniformly corrected.
4. For uncertain characters in names, places, official titles, or dates in the original text, blank spaces were often left. These are now marked with the "" symbol. Where corrections are possible, the added characters are noted in parentheses below the blanks. Errors clearly identified in other editions or the "Xiao Tan Ji Fu" are also corrected accordingly. Uncertain interpretations remain unchanged.
5. The original text used the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches system for dates, which are now annotated with the lunar calendar dates. The corresponding Gregorian dates are also added below the original era references for easy reference.
