Family depicts the story of a feudal family in Chengdu collapsing after the May Fourth Movement. The narrative focuses on the eight or nine months from winter 1920 to autumn 1921, exposing the evils of the feudal autocratic system, tearing apart the scheming and intrigue hidden beneath the facade of familial warmth, revealing the debauchery and shamelessness of the so-called "poetry and propriety"-based feudal family, and portraying the awakening and resistance of a new generation of youth inspired by new ideas, therebying the inevitable collapse of this feudal family.
