Publishing Date: 2007-01-01
Features: With the further deepening of reform and opening-up, the legal system construction of our country is advancing by leaps and bounds. The number of people engaged in legal work, especially those involved in foreign-related legal work, is increasing. They not only need to read and translate English books and texts related to law but also often encounter the need to translate Chinese legal texts into English in their actual work. For this purpose, we have compiled this "Bilingual English-Chinese and Chinese-English Legal Dictionary." This dictionary is a medium-sized professional legal reference book, primarily intended for use by legal, economic and trade, foreign affairs, and translation personnel, as well as legal students and teachers in universities. Its content covers various legal disciplines, including legal theory, legal history, constitutional law, civil law, criminal law, procedural law, administrative law, labor law, contract law, commercial law, public international law, private international law, international economic law, and international trade law. To facilitate readers in finding corresponding translations from both English and Chinese perspectives when reading English originals or translating legal documents, we have adopted a bilingual (English-Chinese and Chinese-English) arrangement. The English-Chinese section of the dictionary contains approximately 36,000 entries, while the Chinese-English section contains approximately 29,000 entries. Our compilation principles are based on the practical needs of legal work: selecting terms that are comprehensive, drawing from various sources, yet concise and practical, with a focus on key points. The definitions are designed to be clear, precise, and standardized. When an entry has two or more translations, we include them as appropriate. In terms of layout and design, the English-Chinese dictionary follows the conventions of other professional dictionaries, while the Chinese-English dictionary attempts a compact and eye-catching new model to enhance readability. During the compilation process, we have learned and drawn inspiration from many valuable resources from numerous professional books and dictionaries published domestically and internationally. We extend our gratitude to all of them. Despite multiple revisions and efforts to perfect this dictionary, due to the limitations of the compilers, it may still fall short of expectations. Omissions, errors, and mistakes are inevitable. Dictionaries should be continuously updated and revised. We sincerely hope that will provide constructive criticism and suggestions so that this dictionary can maintain its vitality through ongoing supplements and revisions.
