Discrete-Time Signal Processing (Second Edition)

Author: Oppenheim, Schafer, and Buck
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-01-01
Features: The second edition of Discrete-Time Signal Processing maintains the style of the previous edition, but considering that by the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the new millennium, "Digital Signal Processing" had become a commonly offered course at the undergraduate level, the authors believed that as a textbook, it should not aim to "cover" all aspects of the discipline's development. Instead, it should reveal the fundamental knowledge, basic theories, and essential methods of the subject, thereby enhancing the problem-solving abilities of students and engineers. The authors have removed some content that is not essential for the undergraduate level, such as the inclusion of cepstral analysis and homomorphic signal processing in the exercises, rather than in the main text. At the same time, recognizing the importance of multi-rate signal processing in oversampling A/D and D/A conversion and digital filter implementation, the authors expanded this section. For example, the cosine transform, which plays a significant role in data compression, has been introduced into the textbook. These additions and deletions in content allow the textbook to present classic material while continuously introducing new concepts, reflecting its rationality, scientific rigor, and modernity.
Another major feature of the second edition is its practicality. "Digital Signal Processing" is a highly practical course, and Oppenheim has maintained the style of recent editions by leaving ample exercises for the readers. Some of these exercises are derived from the literature and are of considerable difficulty. This edition has expanded the number of exercises from 371 in the previous edition to 588, and the number of examples from 113 to 137. Additionally, the exercises are divided into three levels: basic problems (with answers), in-depth problems, and extended problems. These exercises are extremely helpful for deepening the understanding of the textbook content, consolidating fundamental concepts, and cultivating the ability to analyze and solve problems. Learning digital signal processing cannot be separated from hands-on practice. Although this textbook does not include specific laboratory guides, as stated in the preface, "many of the exercises in this book can be easily transformed into computer-based practice problems," and it also points out the specific approaches.
In summary, this book is a significant work by Oppenheim in the field of digital signal processing textbooks. It is characterized by clear concepts, rigorous exposition, logical content arrangement, and a wealth of examples and exercises, making it an excellent foundational textbook. Although the aforementioned textbooks all have corresponding Chinese translations, to better understand the authors' thought process and clarify concepts accurately, it is necessary to study the original version, allowing both the Chinese and English editions to complement each other, experience its essence, and apply it in practice.
