Which treatment method is effective for multiple kidney stones?

Patient's question:

Pain on both sides of the waist and lower back, accompanied by mild urinary discomfort, has been occurring for many years. The specific onset time, contributing factors, or underlying cause are unknown.

Doctor's answer:

Hello: An anechoic area is visible in the renal pelvis, approximately 19x18mm in size, with clear boundaries and a capsule. The internal echo is good. It is recommended to undergo CT and MRI examinations. Personally, I do not rule out the possibility of a pararenal cyst and suggest proceeding with caution.
If it is a pararenal cyst, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is not effective as the cyst prevents the stones from being expelled even if they are fragmented. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is also not advisable as it carries a high risk of damaging the pararenal cyst.
In the case of a pararenal cyst, surgical treatment options include open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, it is recommended to undergo comprehensive examinations at a Level 3 Grade A hospital to clarify the diagnosis before determining the surgical treatment plan.
