Features: Miao Xiaochun's vivid and heartfelt introduction to the four years he spent studying at the prestigious Kassel Academy of Art. He writes about his real-life experiences and inner feelings at every stage of his time at the academy. As an Eastern Chinese, he had to contemplate the differences between the living environment, ways of thinking, teaching systems, and methods of Western Germans. Miao Xiaochun graduated from Nanjing University's German Department and later earned a master's degree in art history and theory from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He also has 10 years of painting experience. This background allows him to integrate into the foreign art education and cultural atmosphere while maintaining a clear mind. He can objectively recognize others' strengths without prejudice, nor blindly admire them, always holding the firm belief: "We too can create great modern culture!"
In terms of art education, what can we learn from Western systems, including Germany? Through his own learning experiences and many vivid examples, Miao Xiaochun offers valuable insights. Based on my reading of the book, a relaxed academic atmosphere and the education and guidance of students while fully respecting their individuality and creativity are extremely important. Additionally, whether in school or as an artist, one must have unique thoughts and ideas, as well as different ways of thinking and doing things.
In his narrative, Miao Xiaochun also shares his observations and opinions on the status of China's "avant-garde" art in the West. Although his remarks are brief, they are thought-provoking.
