Patient's question:

Patient is a male, 59 years old.

Doctor's answer:

Balanoposthitis refers to the inflammation of the inner foreskin and glans penis. A lipoidal substance normally secreted in the foreskin cavity can accumulate as smegma in cases of phimosis or excessive foreskin, irritating the foreskin and glans to cause balanoposthitis. Drug-induced balanitis is a delayed-type allergic reaction, quite common clinically, typically occurring 24 to 72 hours after medication.
During balanoposthitis, the affected area can be soaked in a 1/5000 potassium permanganate solution and then treated with an anti-inflammatory ointment. For allergic balanoposthitis, oral antihistamines and topical corticosteroid ointments are required. If phimosis or foreskin edema prevents retraction for soaking or drainage, and inflammation does not subside with standard treatment, a dorsal slit of the foreskin may be performed to facilitate drainage. Once the inflammation is completely resolved, a circumcision can then be performed.
It is recommended that your husband frequently clean the foreskin and glans to maintain cleanliness and dryness in the foreskin cavity. If phimosis or excessive foreskin is present, circumcision should be considered.
