Will facial nerve palsy heal on its own?

Patient's question:

Brother-in-law Zhou Ping suddenly appeared with facial paralysis after the Lantern Festival. After going to the hospital for a check-up, it was discovered that she had facial nerve palsy. I'd like to know what are the early symptoms of facial nerve palsy? Will it improve on its own?

Doctor's answer:

The recurrence of this disease must be promptly addressed as it will not heal on its own. If the patient strongly closes their eyes and the examiner forcefully pulls their closed eyelids, a slight muscle twitching phenomenon is felt on one side of the upper eyelid, while the other side shows no such signs. This symptom of facial paralysis indicates mild peripheral facial nerve palsy, which is more common. The examiner asks the patient to strongly close their eyes. In normal individuals, when they forcefully close their eyes, the eyelashes are mostly buried between the upper and lower eyelids. When there is facial nerve palsy, the eyelashes may be exposed, especially in cases of mild palsy. When the patient forcefully closes their eyes, the eyelashes on the affected side may initially appear asymmetrical but become more noticeable after a brief period. This is known as a positive eyelash sign.
