Author: Leo Tolstoy
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-08-01
Features: This book collects twenty-five essays, originally published in "The Collected Works of Leo Tolstoy." It only roughly portrays one aspect of the author's thoughts. When selecting the essays, the primary focus was on those of considerable length and rich in literary merit. Although "The Confession" and "The Recollections" are each over forty thousand words long, they were not excluded due to their invaluable historical significance, vivid descriptions, and richly varied narration. Secondly, the hope was that the selected essays would reflect the diversity of the author's style and writing, ranging from autobiographies to wills, from dispatches about the defense of Sevastopol to pamphlets denouncing autocratic rulers, from fables promoting self-cultivation to folk tales intended to warn and advise. They are diverse yet harmonious as a whole.
