73-year-old benign prostatic hyperplasia and chronic cystitis

Patient's question:

Diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia and chronic cystitis due to neurogenic bladder in 2005, urination relies on manual pressure. Visited the hospital, where doctors recommended catheterization due to the potential poor surgical outcome for neurogenic bladder. However, fearing significant impact on quality of life, the method of manual pressure has been used instead.

Doctor's answer:

First, you need to rest in bed, drink more water, and avoid foods. Hot sitz baths can improve perineal blood circulation and reduce symptoms of cystitis. Alkaline drugs such as sodium bicarbonate or potassium citrate can lower urine acidity, relieve bladder spasms, and flavoxate hydrochloride (Urological) can relieve spasms and reduce urinary tract irritation and cystitis symptoms. Traditional 10–14-day antibiotic therapy is not necessary for uncomplicated cystitis. Both domestically and internationally, single large-dose or 3-day short-course treatments are recommended.
