Features: With the pace of China's educational reform and development, the National Institute of Educational Administration celebrated its 50th anniversary in the golden autumn of 2005. Education thrives when the nation thrives; educational administrators are strong when schools flourish. To further deepen educational reform and development, to thoroughly discuss the problems and challenges faced in this process, and to make the anniversary celebration a grand event for educational administrators to inspire wisdom, enhance friendships, and plan for the future, with the support of the Ministry of Education and relevant departments, and with the care, assistance, and demands of students, alumni, and people from all walks of life, the National Institute of Educational Administration successfully held the International Forum for Educational Administrators during the anniversary period, themed "Jointly Planning Educational Reform and Development, Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the National Institute of Educational Administration."
During the forum, 35 renowned experts, scholars, government officials, alumni, and conference delegates from home and abroad delivered academic speeches and conducted thematic discussions, profoundly elaborating on their educational philosophies and extensively exchanging insights on new reform processes. According to the design and negotiations, after the core speeches, four sub-forums were established: "Improving Quality—Enhancing University Teaching and Learning in the New Era," "Conceptual Development and Institutional Arrangements in University Student Management," "Multiculturalism and School Humanistic Education," and "Leadership Capacity Building for University Leaders." Thematic speeches, critiques of viewpoints, and diverse dialogues were conducted in these sub-forums.
To enable numerous university administrative officials and experts to thoroughly understand the grandeur of the forum, further deepen the discussion themes, and jointly share the intellectual achievements of the forum, we organized efforts to compile the most valuable information from the forum, forming this collection titled Higher Education Management in an International Perspective. This collection is coordinated and organized by Professor Yu Jiaqing, former Executive Deputy Director of the National Institute of Educational Administration, and Professor Li Wenchang, Deputy Director, with the coordination and integration assistance of the Research Department. The former Higher Education Leadership Research Office was responsible for the compilation and editing of the section on "Leadership Capacity Building for University Leaders"; the International Education Teaching and Research Department handled the compilation and editing of the section on "Higher Education Quality Assurance and Evaluation"; the Social Sciences Teaching and Research Department was responsible for the compilation and editing of the section on "University Humanistic and Scientific Education"; and the School Management Teaching and Research Department handled the compilation and editing of the section on "University Student Affairs Management." Leaders such as Xiao Qiming, President of Guangxi Normal University Press, the publication of the collection, and editors such as Chen Hongni contributed.
This book explores discussions on constructing the power system of university presidents, reflections on building the capacity of university leaders to navigate the market economy, reforms in Japanese higher education management and leadership, the mechanisms and measures for quality assurance in undergraduate education at Nanjing University, further deliberations on the harmonious development of humanistic and scientific education, the distinctive characteristics of university cultural quality, general education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and cultural quality education for students in science and engineering institutions.
