Features: Most English reading test preparation books introduce some problem-solving techniques. While browsing the table of contents of this book, the author found that it could summarize 80 such techniques, which greatly amazed the author. Moreover, the framework of these theories seems to align well with the spirit of the CET-4 exam. However, building a brilliant theoretical framework is one thing, while explaining these theories clearly and thoroughly is another. With a mix of amazement and skepticism, the author began reading the main text.
In the "Traditional Reading Comprehension" section, the editors analyze the patterns from six aspects: textual cohesion, sentence structure, logical relationships, main ideas, perspectives, and "lightning-fast" answer-finding. These patterns and techniques are explained in the order of "point—line—surface—synthesis—shortcut," covering all aspects of the "Traditional Reading Comprehension". Additionally, they provide detailed analyses of specific problems. It seems that Ye Changqing’s and elaboration are quite meticulous.
In the "Fast Reading Comprehension" section, the summarized tricks are particularly impressive, especially the "location technique," as it is an effective guarantee for achieving the "fast" requirement of the exam. However, under the constraint of speed, making accurate judgments becomes challenging. The following "True/False/Not Given judgment technique" and "sentence completion technique" are precisely the methods to address this issue. It is worth mentioning that the "lightning-fast" answer-finding section provides a detailed explanation of how to distinguish between the troublesome "N" and "NC" answers, which is very practical.
The of "Passage Vocabulary Comprehension" is relatively arbitrary, with no fixed patterns to follow. This book mainly summarizes corner techniques, from determining word types and forms to defining the scope and connotation of word meanings, and finally to "lightning-fast" answer-finding, teaching candidates how to narrow down answer choices step by step. Given that the exam format involves selecting 10 words from 15 to fill in the correct positions, narrowing down the choices is indeed a quick and efficient problem-solving method.
Each pattern and problem-solving technique in the book is accompanied by a reading comprehension exercise, with the number of words and recommended answer time clearly indicated for each passage. After explaining all the patterns and problem-solving techniques, the book also includes six "Peak Reading Training" sets. Each training set covers all three question types, with the quantity and format equivalent to the reading section of a full CET-4 exam paper. It is evident that the purpose of these training sets is to help candidates integrate the 80 theoretical concepts learned earlier and improve their exam-taking skills. This "four ounces displacing a thousand pounds" training method is quite effective, enabling candidates to achieve significant improvement in a short period.
