What causes numbness in the perineum and penis?

Patient's question:

Expert Advice: Sometimes after riding a bicycle, I experience numbness in the perineum and penis when getting off (the last time it caused an acute urinary tract infection). It usually recovers after several minutes. Could you please advise on what I should do? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

58%–70% of people have experienced genital numbness. This research report also indicates that the degree of penile numbness is proportional to cycling distance and time. When people sit on narrow bicycle seats, the weight per unit area they bear is more than seven times greater than when sitting on a chair. Additionally, excessive pressure exerted on the perineum by the seat causes it to bear stress that exceeds the systolic blood pressure. At this point, blood supply to the penis may be temporarily blocked, and the arterial endothelium may suffer varying degrees of damage, ultimately leading to vascular erectile dysfunction.
