Features: Ji Xianlin, styled Xiaolan, is a name less widely recognized than his style name. Stories about Ji Xianlin's versatility, quick wit, humor, lack of petty concerns, and skill in crafting clever and balanced couplets have long been widely circulated and eagerly discussed, often overshadowing his status as a great scholar and high-ranking official. Notes from the Studio of is a work from Ji Xianlin's later years and one of the representative vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty. Its stories are diverse, ranging from coarse to refined, encompassing tales of the upper class's old anecdotes, bureaucratic life, human emotions, and historical records, as well as the mundane chatter, strange events, divination, and supernatural tales of the lower classes. These stories, both refined and vulgar, straightforward and bizarre, span various perspectives and dimensions, reflecting the social life of the time, revealing the contradictions of society, and showcasing the virtues and vices of figures from different social classes.
In the early Qing Dynasty, when literary purges were rampant, a slight oversight by scholars could often lead to swift and severe consequences. Yet, Ji Xianlin's Notes from the Studio of dares to expose the dark side of society through direct and indirect means, condemning the hypocrisy and harm of Confucian scholars, revealing the corruption of the bureaucracy, and critiquing unreasonable phenomena. This courage and boldness not only elevate the significance of Notes from the Studio of in the history of Chinese literature but also deserve our admiration and praise in later generations.
