The Han Empire was the longest-lasting empire in Chinese history. Together with the experimental Qin Empire before it, it pioneered and developed a new political and social culture, marking a prosperous era nurtured by the indigenous culture of China. However, after Emperor Hu of the Eastern Han Dynasty, phenomena such as weak emperors, powerful foreign relatives, tyrannical eunuchs, factional suppression, the rise of aristocratic clans, manorial economies, religious movements, peasant uprisings, border generals' rebellions, and warlord divisions followed one after another. After the reigns of Emperors Huan and Ling, these contradictions erupted in full force. This book focuses on the fifty-two-year period of the reigns of Emperors Ling and Xian, presenting a panoramic view of the empire's decline and collapse, thereby revealing some fundamental contradictions in traditional Chinese political culture. Readers will easily notice that the downfall of any subsequent empire in Chinese history repeated the same path as the Han Empire, albeit in different forms. Because the downfall of this empire not only gave our nation its name but also shaped the character of our nation.
