What are the main manifestations of prostatitis in women?

Patient's question:

What are the main manifestations of prostatitis in women? How can it be identified?

Doctor's answer:

Prostatitis first manifests as radiating pain. The pain of chronic prostatitis is not limited to the urethra and perineum but also radiates to nearby areas, with lower back pain being the most common. Additionally, areas such as the penis, spermatic cord, scrotum, lower abdomen, groin (inner thigh), thighs, and rectum can be affected. It should be noted that the lower back pain caused by chronic prostatitis is located in the lower lumbar region, which can easily be confused with lower back pain caused by musculoskeletal issues such as myofascialitis or lumbar muscle strain. However, the latter is often near the beltline area and is higher in position compared to the lower back pain caused by prostatitis, making it distinguishable. Patients may also experience urinary discomfort. The first sign of prostatitis is significant discomfort during urination, which can manifest as bladder irritation symptoms such as frequent urination, a burning sensation and pain during urination that radiates to the head of the penis. Mucus or other secretions may be present at the urethral opening in the morning, and a feeling of difficulty urinating may also occur.
