Features: The Art and Culture of Chinese Tea explores the subject from multidisciplinary perspectives such as tea science, anthropology, ethnology, folk studies, humanities, aesthetics, and art theory, tracing the evolution of Chinese tea culture. From the vast historical documents of Chinese tea culture, I have carefully selected and referenced the past while connecting it to the present, striving to distill the essence of the profound Chinese tea culture. I have also incorporated new ideas, perspectives, and insights into modern tea culture, aiming for progress. The Art and Culture of Chinese Tea is divided into thirteen chapters, organized into three parts: Upper, Middle, and Lower. The first six chapters form the Upper Part, dedicated to discussing "The Art of Chinese Tea Science." The remaining seven chapters constitute the Middle and Lower Parts, respectively introducing "Tea and Horse Culture Art" and "A Grand View of Pu-erh Tea Art." Although the title does not include the word "history," the book focuses on tracing the development of Chinese tea culture and Pu-erh tea culture from a historical and literary perspective, aiming for a combination of historical analysis and theoretical discussion. The writing style balances academic rigor, artistic expression, and accessibility, while the use of materials is both extensive and well-structured.
The Art and Culture of Chinese Tea emphasizes the "new," highlighting the use of classical texts to discuss Chinese tea science, showcasing tea paintings, exploring tea and horse culture, understanding the history of Pu-erh tea, and appreciating Pu-erh tea art. It covers not only tea history but also everyday tea customs and the art of tea drinking. In the Upper Part, the chapter "Exploring Tea Painting Art" collects tea painting works from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties to the modern era, dazzling readers and allowing them to experience the profound charm of Chinese tea art and culture. This part also includes a dedicated chapter on "Discussing Chinese Tea Affairs." Uniquely, it proposes the "Five New Directions in Which Tea Has Changed Our Lives in the 21st Century," such as tea entering the modern concept of health, tea smoothing interpersonal relationships, and other related issues.
In the Middle Part, "Tea and Horse Culture Art," the book examines the ecological environment, transportation routes, and production tools of the "Tea Horse Road" in Yunnan and Tibet from multidisciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, ethnology, folk studies, aesthetics, and art theory. It also dedicates a substantial chapter to the popular topic of "Pu-erh Tea" in contemporary Chinese tea studies. Chapter 11, "The Art of Pu-erh Tea," presents Pu-erh tea, widely regarded as "a living antique" or "a drinkable antique" in the tea academic community, through the lenses of aesthetics, psychology, behavioral science, and design art. It offers original insights into four academic topics: the artistic process of Pu-erh tea production, the visual art of Pu-erh tea infusion, the behavioral art of Pu-erh tea's aged aroma, and the design art of Pu-erh tea packaging.
The Art and Culture of Chinese Tea is deeply rooted in Chinese tea culture, imbued with rich humanistic sentiments, folk traditions, ethnological colors, and anthropological flavors, radiating the philosophy of art and aesthetics throughout. To make the book concise and practical, it is illustrated with numerous historical and digital photographs, complemented by hand-drawn illustrations where appropriate to enhance visual appeal.
