Does varicocele require surgery?

Patient's question:

Three-tier hospital conducted a thorough examination and found varicose veins. Now, standing for a long time causes pain in a vein under the testicles, which improves after sleeping. The main issue is that pain occurs when standing for a long time. Currently, the marriage hasn't been dissolved yet. Can surgery be avoided? The doctor said to take Tōqing tablets only when it hurts and not to take them when it doesn't. What should I do now?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: It doesn't necessarily require surgery, as the specific treatment depends on your condition. In cases of varicocele, blood accumulation in the spermatic veins can lead to increased temperature in the scrotum, causing the testicular temperature to drop by 1℃ to 2℃. If the temperature remains elevated for a long period, it can interfere with sperm production, resulting in azoospermia or oligozoospermia. For those with mild symptoms or no symptoms, wearing an elastic stocking or using a scrotal support band can be helpful. Men with severe symptoms and varicocele accompanied by sperm abnormalities should undergo surgical treatment. Medication will not stabilize or resolve varicocele on its own. Wishing you good health!
