What is impotence? How is impotence?

Patient's question:

What is impotence? How is impotence caused?

Doctor's answer:

"Erectile dysfunction (ED)" was the former name for "impotence." In 1992, after discussions among relevant experts, the National Institutes of Health in the United States decided to replace the term "impotence" with "erectile dysfunction." Erectile dysfunction (ED) refers to the persistent inability to achieve and maintain an adequate erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse over the past three months. ED is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions in men. Although ED is not a life-threatening disease, it is closely related to the patient's quality of life, sexual partner relationships, and family stability. It is also an early warning sign for many physical illnesses.
