Patient's question:
Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: Irregular red spots on the glans, with some pain. Is it a sexually transmitted disease?Duration of onset and persistence: 2-4 days
Doctor's answer:
A small red spot on the glans is a typical symptom of balanoposthitis, which refers to the inflammation of the inner foreskin and glans. A lipoidal substance normally secreted in the foreskin cavity can accumulate as smegma in cases of phimosis or excessive foreskin, irritating the foreskin and glans to cause balanoposthitis. The basic principle of Western medicine treatment is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Generally, both topical and systemic treatments are used. For acute superficial balanoposthitis and annular erosive balanoposthitis, erythromycin and tetracycline are the first-line treatments, usually taken at 0.5g per dose, four times daily. For trichomoniasis-induced balanoposthitis, metronidazole is the first-line treatment, taken at 0.2g per dose, three times daily, for a total of 10 days. For candidal balanoposthitis caused by Candida, it is commonly treated with griseofulvin or itraconazole. Griseofulvin is administered at 100,000 to 200,000 units per dose, twice daily. Itraconazole is taken at 100mg per dose, twice daily, for a total of 7 days.
