Doctor's answer:

Hello: Circumcision is one of the common minor surgeries performed in outpatient clinics, used to treat conditions such as phimosis and excessive prepuce. It is typically performed under local anesthesia, blocking the pudendal nerve at the base of the penis. Since no hospitalization is required after the surgery, proper home care is particularly important. Some patients do not pay attention to rest, allowing the wound to become contaminated, which can lead to postoperative complications such as bleeding, infection, pain, bruising of the glans penis, or even necrosis, resulting in poor outcomes. The following points are specially patients to pay attention:
  1. Rest in bed for 3–4 days after the surgery, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting. Some young people may feel embarrassed to take time off work and continue working, but due to poor local blood circulation, this can directly lead to swelling of the glans penis, turning it purple like an eggplant and affecting wound healing.
  2. Wear loose underwear. After the wound is bandaged, a gauze drape is usually placed in the perineal area to reduce friction on the glans penis.
  3. Mild edema of the glans penis within 3–4 days after the surgery is normal. This is a physiological response caused by anesthesia and the surgery. Note that the swelling should appear pink at this stage.
  4. Avoid getting the dressing wet when urinating. If it becomes soaked with urine, replace it promptly. You may prepare 75% alcohol or cotton balls soaked in 1:10,000 povidone-iodine solution or isotonic saline. After urinating, clean the urethral area and keep the wound dressing clean, or soak the glans penis in warm water containing 1:5,000 potassium permanganate solution daily.
  5. For 3–4 days after the surgery, take a sedative such as diazepam 2.5 mg before bed to prevent penile erection, which may cause pain or bleeding. Young people should pay special attention, as the glans penis, long covered by the prepuce, has very sensitive nerve endings. Once exposed,
