Etymology: Book 3 (Revised Edition)

Author: Commercial Press Editorial Department
Publisher:
Publish Date: 1981-12-01
Features: The revision of this edition is guided by the standpoints, viewpoints, and methods of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought. According to the nature and tasks of the book, modern terms related to natural sciences, social sciences, and applied technologies in the old etymological dictionary have been removed. The scope of entries generally ends with the Opium War (A.D. 1840), and some more common terms have been added while a few non-word or overly obscure terms have been deleted. Single characters are annotated with Pinyin and letters, and the ancient rhyme tables of the Guangyun are used to provide phonetic annotations, including initials. For characters not included in the Guangyun, the phonetic annotations from the Jiyun or other rhyme tables and character dictionaries are used. The definitions are concise and precise, with attention paid to the origins of words and their evolution in usage. The text of the title pages has been reviewed, and the author, title, and volume are clearly marked.
