Features: This book records the life of Maxim Gorky during his time in Kazan. At the age of sixteen, he left his hometown and went to Kazan to study. After this dream shattered, he had to struggle for survival. He lived in a "dampy room," did hard labor, associated with beggars, and interacted with all kinds of petty bourgeoisie and intellectuals. In search of a meaningful life, he came to "Red Village," near Kazan, and worked as a shop assistant in a grocery store. In daily life, he made friends with some farmers. He gained an understanding of the farmers' lives and thoughts and was persecuted by the rich peasants, forcing him to leave Red Village and Kazan, and once again travel far away in search of a new home for his life and spirit. Although Gorky did not attend a formal university, he entered a vast "social university." In this university, he experienced the complex path of spiritual development, endured various life tests, and made initial explorations into the meaning of life and the complexity of the world.
