Features: The Dunhuang Grottoes are an inexhaustible cultural and spiritual treasure left by the ancestors of the Chinese nation for future generations. More and more Chinese people take pride in the splendid ancient Chinese culture preserved in the Dunhuang Grottoes! To better and more widely promote knowledge of the Dunhuang Grottoes among the general public and meet the needs of tourists, several senior experts who had long been engaged in research at the Dunhuang Grottoes, together with Gansu People's Fine Arts Publishing House, jointly planned and decided to compile and publish this "Comprehensive Dictionary of Dunhuang Grottoes." With the great kindness of the senior predecessors, I, Ma De, humbly serve as the editor-in-chief, and now provide the following explanations regarding the compilation of this dictionary:
1. All the experts who participated in the compilation of this dictionary are professionals from various fields who have long been engaged in Dunhuang Grottoes research at the Dunhuang Academy. Some have retired and are now at home, while others are burdened with heavy research or management tasks. Everyone completed this work during their spare time, especially by sacrificing a significant amount of rest time. Here, I sincerely express my gratitude to all the senior predecessors and colleagues who participated in the compilation of this dictionary!
2. During the compilation process, this dictionary referred to a series of reference books such as "The Comprehensive Dictionary of Dunhuang Studies," "The Comprehensive Dictionary of Buddhism," and "The Dictionary of Religion," as well as a series of research findings from previous publications such as "The Catalogue of the Content of the Dunhuang Grottoes," "Donor Inscriptions at the Mogao Caves," "The Temple Ruins in Front of the Mogao Caves," "Research on Dunhuang Architecture," "Studies on the History of the Mogao Caves," "Chinese Caves," "The Complete Collection of Chinese Fine Arts," "The Complete Collection of Chinese Murals," "The Complete Collection of Dunhuang Grottoes Art," "Dunhuang Studies," "Journal of Dunhuang Studies," and "Dunhuang Studies." Due to the nature and scope of this dictionary, it is not feasible to list them all in detail. My sincere apologies for this omission.
