1. Selection of Texts
The book selects narrative texts, expository texts, argumentative texts, and ancient Chinese passages and poems from both in-class and out-of-class materials according to the relevant provisions of the Chinese language curriculum standards and the common principles for selecting reading materials in various regions for the junior high school entrance examination. The selected texts are designed to be both high in quality and engaging, with appropriate difficulty and length. The reading exercises in each unit are roughly equivalent to the amount for one class period.
2. Organization
The book follows the principle of dividing before summarizing. It first covers the reading of modern narrative texts, expository texts, and argumentative texts, followed by ancient Chinese poems and articles, and finally the simulated reading papers that combine ancient and modern texts and cover all styles, which are comprehensive exercises designed according to the practical requirements of the examination.
3. Test Questions
After each reading passage, a certain number of test questions are compiled based on the actual requirements of the examination. The basic question types are similar to those in junior high school entrance examination papers, including multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, and short-answer questions. For ancient Chinese reading, there are also questions requiring the translation of sentences. Both ancient and modern Chinese reading sections include a certain number of open-ended questions. The reference answers are compiled at the back of the book.
