Features: During the writing process, this book focuses on the following points: Appreciating beautiful writing and learning words through memorizing sentences. It is difficult to remember and use a word if it is separated from the actual context of its usage. We have carefully selected 70 beautiful short passages and provided the Chinese context for each. By placing vocabulary in both English and Chinese contexts, readers can firmly remember these words and learn how to use them while appreciating the beautiful passages and memorizing natural expressions. The juxtaposition of English and Chinese contexts is the biggest feature of this book and is unprecedented in similar books both domestically and internationally.
Chunking or quantitative memorization. We have divided the more than 3,200 words from the post-secondary entrance examination syllabus, excluding secondary school vocabulary, into 70 units. This makes the vast sea of words seem smaller and easier to tackle, allowing readers to reach their final goal step by step. Especially, the 500 new words added to the new syllabus have also been integrated into these 70 model passages.
Emphasizing repetition rate to strengthen memory. According to research by language experts, a learner must encounter a word at least 5 times to remember it. In this book, a significant portion of the words appear 3-5 times, and they are presented in different contexts. Such a high repetition rate in different contexts will achieve the effects of rapid memorization and flexible application. Short-term memory can also be converted into long-term memory.
Focusing on vocabulary while also covering reading and translation. The words selected in this book are mostly core and frequently tested vocabulary for the post-secondary entrance examination. The layered meaning of a word entry refers to the most common meaning, as well as the meaning of the word in an English context. The divergent meanings of the word should also be grasped as much as possible. We have translated the selected passages into Chinese and provided annotations on key points and difficulties. Therefore, this book is also an ideal supplementary material for post-secondary entrance examination reading comprehension and English-Chinese translation.
