Features: "The Great Dictionary" is a large-scale comprehensive dictionary. Its publication fills a gap in Chinese lexicography. To date, "The Cihai" is the only large-scale comprehensive dictionary in China, encompassing both single characters and general terms, as well as specialized terms across various fields, serving as both a general and a specialized dictionary. It features a rich vocabulary, convenient retrieval, strong practicality, and is widely favored by readers. With the accelerated pace of human knowledge accumulation and innovation, and the improvement of China's cultural literacy, many readers with higher education levels have raised higher demands for the Cihai. Therefore, while continuing to compile new editions of the Cihai to meet contemporary needs, it is essential to compile a larger-scale, more comprehensive, and richer dictionary than the Cihai. The compilation of "The Great Dictionary" is based on "The Cihai," inheriting its strengths and expanding upon them, with a focus on adding new fields and terms/meanings not covered in the Cihai, as well as filling in gaps. The entire dictionary contains approximately 250,000 entries, totaling about 50 million words, with each entry being at least twice as many as those in the Cihai. It is compiled and published in volumes according to disciplinary categories. Volume I includes over 8,500 entries on medical and pharmaceutical terms, covering: basic terminology in various disciplines of medical and healthcare, medical figures, historical and literary documents of traditional Chinese medicine, major theories and doctrines, physiological and pathological conditions of the human body systems, disease names, diagnostic methods, and medical devices, as well as disease names and pathogens in medical microbiology and parasitology that are related to the human body. Volume II is organized into three major categories: General, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Modern Medicine. Among these, Traditional Chinese Medicine is further divided into general terminology, historical and literary studies, basic theories, pharmaceuticals, health preservation, and clinical medicine according to its traditional disciplinary conventions. Modern Medicine is arranged into basic medicine, clinical medicine, rehabilitation medicine, preventive medicine, military medicine, other specialized medical fields, and pharmacy. These categories are designed for convenience of retrieval and do not represent the disciplinary system.
