For junior high school students, English is a very important subject. In English exams, reading comprehension is one of the main question types, accounting for about 40% of the exam paper, and the trend is increasing. The Full-Time Secondary School English Teaching Syllabus states that "to improve students' English reading ability, relying solely on textbook passages is far from enough. It is necessary to guide students to read a certain number of supplementary materials according to their grade level and specific circumstances." The recently issued Ministry of Education's "New Curriculum Standards" also makes clear provisions on reading content in English teaching: middle school students should read appropriate supplementary materials after mastering textbook knowledge, while ensuring the content is healthy, ( -), diverse in themes and genres, with varying article structures. Emphasis is placed on the ideological, entertaining, informative, cultural, challenging, and contemporary nature of the reading content. One of the purposes of this is to encourage students to expand their thinking, broaden their horizons, and cultivate innovative and practical skills, ultimately improving their language abilities and laying a solid foundation for transitioning to quality-oriented education. To better adapt to this transformation and help students master and accumulate more language knowledge, improve their reading comprehension level, and further cultivate their innovative and practical skills, we have organized first-line English teachers with years of rich teaching experience to meticulously compile the "Categorized English Reading" series for middle school students, guided by the spirit of the Full-Time Secondary School English Teaching Syllabus and the New Curriculum Standards. The guiding principles for the first and second grades fully reflect the cultivation of basic knowledge and skills, while the third grade, while emphasizing the basics, appropriately aligns with the junior high school entrance exam. For students taking the junior high school entrance exam, this book serves as both a reading resource and a preparation guide, enabling readers to achieve twice the result with half the effort through reading this book. "Categorized English Reading" for junior high school students has the following features: 1. Appropriate length. With limited vocabulary and knowledge, reading materials of appropriate length can cultivate students' reading skills while fostering their interest in reading. 2. Graded reading. Each reading material has a different difficulty level, generally increasing progressively, and continuously expands students' knowledge and improves their reading skills in a step-by-step manner. 3. Diverse themes. Reading materials include not only introductions to characters, humorous stories, social culture, science and technology, daily life, and historical and cultural knowledge but also fables, human geography, and more. 4. Authenticity. Most reading materials are adapted from original foreign articles to meet the reading requirements of Chinese middle school students, helping them better understand and appreciate the content. 5. Strong contemporary relevance. Reading materials track contemporary characteristics, align with the interests and needs of today's middle school students, and maintain the feature of staying synchronized with the times. Of course, despite our efforts to meet reader requirements, this series has certain shortcomings. We hope teachers and students will provide valuable feedback.
