Matéo Falcone depicts a noble outlaw who sells his own son to the authorities in order to save a fugitive bandit,, and takes his own life to uphold justice, showcasing the rugged customs of Corsica. The Yellow Bowl tells the story of a high-society couple entangled in a tragic love affair over an Etruscan vase, with meticulous psychological analysis. The Venus of Ille is filled with supernatural mystery, as a Venus statue unearthed from the ground comes to life and takes the life of a newlywed. Colombe is set against the backdrop of familial vendettas unique to Corsica, narrating the story of the beautiful, strong, intelligent, and brave young woman Colombe, who convinces her brother to avenge their father's murder, expressing the author's admiration for the wildness of the world beyond civilization. Carmen is Mérimée's most famous work. The beautiful, rebellious, and passionate Gypsy girl Carmen, who adores freedom, tricks the soldier José into freeing her to avoid imprisonment. José falls in love with her and becomes a smuggler for her. However, José grows jealous and ultimately loses Carmen's love. Carmen would rather be killed than continue loving him. The emotional conflict between José and Carmen also represents the clash between civilization and nature, restraint and freedom. José's weakness only highlights Carmen's loyalty to the ideal of freedom. Carmen is the pinnacle of Mérimée's creation. The Blue Room is quite similar to a suspenseful and gripping detective novel, with the truth only revealed in the final moment, demonstrating Mérimée's highly refined narrative skills. Although these works cannot fully reflect the breadth of Mérimée's creativity, readers can still savor the essence of his novelistic art.
