The orphan Heathcliff is adopted by the master of Wuthering Heights, Mr. Earnshaw, and his daughter Catherine grows up with him, developing a passionate love. Meanwhile, the master's son Hindley hates him. After the elder Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is reduced to a servant and subjected to various forms of abuse. Catherine marries Edgar Linton, the master of Thrushcross Grange, to gain financial support for Heathcliff from his wealth. Heathcliff learns of this and leaves in anger. Several years later, Heathcliff returns enriched, driving Hindley to bankruptcy and seducing Edgar's sister to marry him, torturing her mercilessly.
