"Return to My Homeland": "Return to my homeland! The fields are overgrown, why not return? Since I have let my heart be enslaved by my body, why should I lament and grieve alone? I realize that the past cannot be admonished, but the future can be pursued; I have strayed but not far, and now I recognize that today is right and yesterday was wrong. The boat glides lightly, the wind blows my clothes. I ask the traveler about the road ahead, and regret that the dawn is too early. Then I see my humble home, and I run there with joy. My servants welcome me, and my children wait at the door. The three paths are overgrown, but the pine and chrysanthemum still stand. I take my young ones into the room, where wine fills the cup. I pour wine for myself, gaze at the courtyard trees with a joyful face, lean on the south window to express my pride, and realize that a small space is easy to be at ease. Every day I stroll through the garden to find pleasure, though the gate is always closed. I lead the elderly to rest, and sometimes I raise my head to gaze afar. Clouds drift out of the peaks without intention, and birds return when tired. The light fades as it enters, and I linger by the lonely pine. "Return to my homeland! Let me cease association and end wandering. The world has abandoned me, so why should I seek further? I delight in the words of my kin, and enjoy music and books to dispel my worries. The farmer tells me that spring has arrived, and there are tasks in the western fields. Sometimes I order my carriage, or row a lone boat. I seek the winding valleys and cross the rugged hills. Trees flourish with vigor, and springs flow gently. I envy all things for their timely success, and feel that my life is coming to an end. Enough! How long can I dwell in this world? Why not follow my heart and let go? Why am I in such haste, seeking where to go? Wealth and honor are not my wish, and the celestial realm is not attainable. I long for fine days and go alone, or plant a staff to till the land. I climb the eastern hill to let out a cry, and by the clear stream I compose poems. I ride with the changes and return to my end, content with the will of heaven. What more doubt can I have?
"Memorial to the Emperor": "I, Zhuge Liang, speak: The former emperor began his great enterprise but died halfway through. Now the world is divided into three, and Yi Province is exhausted, truly a critical moment of survival or ruin. Yet the guards and ministers do not slacken within, and the loyal and determined do not forget themselves without: they follow the exceptional favor of the former emperor and wish to repay it to your majesty. It is indeed appropriate to open your ears widely and illuminate the virtues of the former emperor, to foster the spirit of the loyal and determined; it is not appropriate to undervalue yourself, to cite analogies inappropriately, and to block the way of honest counsel. Within the palace and the court, all are one body; in promoting or punishing, there should be no difference: if there are those who commit crimes or act virtuously, they should be handed over to the authorities for judgment of punishments and rewards, to demonstrate your majesty's fair and clear governance; it is not appropriate to show favoritism and to have different laws within and without. The Attendant Ministers Gu Youzhi, Fei Yi, and Dong Yun, among others, are all honest and upright, with loyal and pure intentions, which is why the former emperor selected them to pass on to you. I think that matters in the palace, whether great or small, should all be consulted with them before implementation, so that any omissions can be supplemented and benefits increased. General Xiang Chen, with a gentle and upright character, is skilled in military affairs. If tested as before, the former emperor praised him as 'capable,' which is why I suggest appointing him as the supervisor of the army. I think that matters in the camp, whether great or small, should all be consulted with him before implementation, so that the army can be harmonious and the good and bad properly assigned. To be close to loyal ministers and distant from petty men—this is why the Former Han Dynasty flourished; to be close to petty men and distant from loyal ministers—this is why the Later Han Dynasty declined. When the former emperor was alive, he often discussed this with me, and he never ceased to sigh with grief and regret for Emperor Huan and Emperor Ling! The Attendant Ministers, Secretaries, Chief Historians, and Assistant Secretaries are all loyal and righteous ministers who would die for their country. I hope your majesty will be close to them and trust them, so that the prosperity of the Han Dynasty can be anticipated in days to come. I was originally a commoner, tilling the land in Nanyang, seeking only to survive in troubled times and not seeking fame among the feudal lords. The former emperor, without regard for my lowly status, humbled himself and came three times to my thatched hut to consult me on affairs of the time. Thus moved, I promised the former emperor to serve him. Later, when disaster struck, I accepted appointment at the time of the defeated army, and was given orders in perilous times: it has been twenty-one years since then. The former emperor knew my caution, so at the moment of his death, he entrusted me with great affairs. Since receiving the order, I have worried day and night, fearing that I might fail to fulfill my duty and dishonor the former emperor's wisdom. Therefore, in the fifth month, I crossed the Luo River and entered the barren lands. Now the south is pacified, and our army is well-equipped. It is time to reward the generals and lead the army north to pacify the central plains. I will exert my limited abilities to eliminate the villains and restore the Han Dynasty to its former capital: this is my duty to repay the former emperor and be loyal to your majesty. As for weighing and adjusting, and offering honest counsel, that is the duty of Gu Youzhi, Fei Yi, and Dong Yun. I hope your majesty will entrust me with the task of defeating the enemy and restoring the dynasty. If I fail, then punish me to report to the spirit of the former emperor; if there is no word of restoration, then blame Gu Youzhi, Fei Yi, and Dong Yun for their negligence, to show their slowness. Your majesty should also plan for yourself, seek good advice, listen to wise words, and deeply follow the former emperor's last will. I am filled with gratitude for the favor I have received! Now I must leave, and as I write this memorial, tears stream down my cheeks, and I know not what to say."
