Features: Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a famous French novelist and poet. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is his representative long novel. The Gypsy girl Esmeralda performs on the street, and the Archdeacon Frollo of Notre-Dame Cathedral falls in love with her and wants to possess her. Later, he discovers that she has another lover, kills him, and frames her, leading to her being sentenced to death. The ugly bell ringer Quasimodo, who loves and respects her deeply, rescues her and takes her to Notre-Dame for refuge. Frollo abducts her, forcing her to succumb to his beastly desires. After she refuses, Frollo hands her over to the authorities, watching from the rooftop of Notre-Dame as she is hanged. In despair, Quasimodo, in anger, pushes Frollo off the rooftop, killing him instantly. He then goes to the cave of Montfaucon, embraces Esmeralda's dead body, and dies with her, completing their "wedding."
