Is jaundice in newborns caused by hunger?

Patient's question:

Hello, recently my child was diagnosed with neonatal jaundice. I don't know what this is either. I heard from others and the elderly that this might be caused by hunger. Could you please tell me if neonatal jaundice is due to hunger?

Doctor's answer:

Newborn jaundice is not caused by hunger, and hunger is not affected. It is mainly due to various factors of the mother, but jaundice will disappear on its own. Infants usually exhibit symptoms such as yellow skin, yellow sclera, and frequent urination 2-3 days after birth, which is known as newborn jaundice. Medical definition: Newborn jaundice occurs when the bilirubin level in the blood exceeds 5 milligrams per deciliter. Jaundice is a common symptom during the neonatal period. If the newborn is in good condition, it typically disappears within 10 to 14 days without any other symptoms.
