Features: Nanjing is an ancient capital with ten dynasties, a long history, prosperous culture, and developed economy. It is currently the capital of Jiangsu Province. The Nanjing Municipal Archives houses a vast collection of archival materials from various historical periods in Nanjing, especially those formed since the Republic of China, with extremely rich content. To reveal the basic composition and main content of the archival materials in our collection, further develop archival information resources, and enable various sectors of society to understand the Nanjing Municipal Archives and become familiar with and utilize its archival materials, we have compiled the "Guide to the Nanjing Municipal Archives" (hereinafter referred to as "The Guide").
1. The Guide was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the "Compilation Standards for Archive Guides" issued by the National Archives Administration, adhering to the historical materialist perspective and combining the actual situation of the Nanjing Municipal Archives. It is a comprehensive, objective, and detailed reference book.
2. The Guide consists of a preface, main text, appendices, and illustrations. The content of each chapter in the main text is as follows:
- Chapter 1: Overview of the Nanjing Municipal Archives
- Chapter 2: Archives of the Republic of China Period
- Chapter 3: Archives of the History of the New Democratic Revolution
- Chapter 4: Archives of the People's Republic of China Period
- Chapter 5: Person Archives
- Chapter 6: Other Archives
- Chapter 7: Materials
3. The introduction to archival fonds is the core part of this book. Important archival fonds are introduced individually; non-essential fonds with similar functions, tasks, and characteristics are grouped and introduced comprehensively; small fonds with few archives and low utilization rates are listed in the fonds directory without introduction. The introduction to archival fonds generally consists of two parts: an overview of the organization and archival status and content. The basic method is to organize the introduction by fonds. Each archival unit is usually listed with only one fonds name. However, due to the complexity of institutional changes and names, some archival units list the main fonds name along with other names that played a significant role, had a long-term impact, and were used during the evolution of the organization, enclosed in parentheses. If two organizations operate under the same roof, the name of the other organization is also enclosed in parentheses. The content of archives is generally categorized, but if the content is limited, it is not categorized.
4. The compilation of the introduction to archival fonds began in 1987, and the book was compiled and made available for internal use in 1991. It has now been further supplemented and revised for publication and distribution to the public.
5. The overview of the archives, the content of archival materials, and the introduction of archives from institutions that were merged or abolished in recent years institutional reforms are up to 1997. The content of other archival materials in the collection is up to 1980.
6. The following individuals participated in the compilation or proofreading of the introduction to archival fonds of The Guide (listed in alphabetical order by surname): Ding Feng, Wang Wei, Wang Jun, Wang Changxi, Liu Feng, Qiao Wenyun, Zhu Minhua, Zhuang Deru, Rui Li, He Tao, Li Xiaoguan, Yang Zhonghui, Jin Shan, Zhang Jianning, Ao Yu, Xia Bei, Gui Yanxia, Guo Weiya, Gu Liyang, Huang Huiying, Cheng Jianqing, Cai Yingmei, etc. Dao Yuan and Chen Qingping reviewed and compiled the book, and Wang Chenghua reviewed the chapter structure and content of the entire book.
