Features: Gustav Mahler (1860–1911), an outstanding Austrian composer and conductor. Born in Karlsbad, Bohemia, he showed musical talent from a young age. At the age of six, he participated in a piano competition, and by eight, he was already teaching other children. At fifteen, he entered the Vienna Conservatory of Music, later switching to composition and conducting. In 1885, he achieved great success while conducting Mendelssohn’s oratorio St. Paul in Leipzig and was appointed as the conductor of the Prague State Opera. He also served as a conductor at opera houses in Leipzig, Budapest, and Vienna, becoming one of the greatest conductors of his time and a pioneer of modern concert performance models. In 1907, he left the opera world and moved to the United States,. In his spare time, he devoted himself to composition, writing ten symphonies, four choral works with orchestral accompaniment, one oratorio, and five songs. Mahler’s symphonies are characterized by grandeur in conception and massive scale, requiring a large orchestra to perform. In style, he strove to develop the tradition of Viennese classical symphonies, with works marked by distinct features and themes rooted in Viennese folk music. Moreover, except for the Symphony No. 10, all of his symphonies incorporated choral elements, greatly enriching the expressive power of symphonic music and playing a significant role in the development of 20th-century music. Many of his works reflect his understanding of Freudian psychoanalysis. Representative works include the symphonies Titan, Resurrection, and The Song of the Earth, among others.
