Features: Shi Zhangyuan is a remarkable individual and a gifted talent. His uniqueness lies in this—he holds a hoe in one hand to till the land and a pen in the other to compose songs. For half a century, he has achieved dual success with equal dedication. He is a true farmer-composer. In rural areas, there are many folk singers and instrumentalists who often set newly composed lyrics to existing folk tunes, which is quite common. Zhangyuan started in the same way. However, what sets him apart is his refusal to limit himself to merely singing established folk songs. Instead, he strives to create original melodies, which is no easy feat. Music is an abstract art—it is not as concrete or direct as storytelling, lyric writing, painting, or paper cutting, which all have clear visual representations to simulate. In music, he has both inherited traditions and innovated. Especially since the new era, he has continuously expanded and updated both the themes and content, as well as the techniques and forms, never resting on his laurels. With an open mind and boundless enthusiasm, he embraces new life. For an eighty-four-year-old man, this is truly commendable.
