Author: Yuan Kejia
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This book primarily selects modernist works from Western capitalist countries. While some modernist works from Latin America and the East are also included, they are essentially echoes of the former. Therefore, this article focuses on Western modernism, leaving it to the readers to draw broader conclusions. The modernist sub-genres, writers, and works mentioned in this article are discussed in detail or translated in the book itself, so they are generally not elaborated upon here. Instead, we provide an overview of the emergence and development of modernist literature, its ideological and artistic characteristics, its social background and intellectual roots, its social significance and artistic value, and the attitude we should adopt towards it, for the reference of the readers. This book mainly translates the later Symbolist and Expressionist works from Western capitalist countries, translated by renowned scholars such as Ai Qing, Guo Moruo, and Yuan Kejia. It includes works by authors like Verhaeren, Valéry, Yeats, Eliot, and Kafka, focusing on the characteristics of the later Symbolist and Expressionist schools. Each translation is preceded by a brief biography of the author, providing readers with better understanding of foreign modernist works.
