Features: The plum blossoms depicted in painting embody their cold and noble temperament, as well as their cool and elegant hues, much like the solitary and refined spirit of scholars. Hongjun's plum blossoms in art are, in essence, a reflection of his character. Observing his plum blossoms, the branches are sharp and upright, the blossoms stand tall and proud. In the face of biting cold and snow, they compete in beauty—this can be seen as a portrayal of Hongjun's past life—his resilience in adversity, never giving up on lofty aspirations; his desire to contribute to the world, and his ability to remain uncorrupted by wealth and fame are particularly commendable. Hongjun is compassionate, generous, and has often acted virtuously, earning praise from society. The Master said, "One should aspire to greatness, grounded in virtue, rely on benevolence, and engage in the arts." Observing Hongjun, one could truly call him an embodiment of these teachings. With joy, this is the preface.
Historically, painters of plum blossoms often conveyed a sense of elegance; in modern times, however, the plum blossoms of Shanghai and Lingnan have become colorful and somewhat vulgar, with the fragrance of plum blossoms transforming into a passionate yet superficial charm. While such beauty may delight the eye, it lacks the resonance of a secluded valley, leaving this solitary soul to wander the world alone. Recently, I have occasionally viewed Rong Hongjun's plum blossom fan paintings and found them refreshingly light, like sipping dry red wine after a meal, followed by a taste of rustic rice wine. It sweeps away the sweetness and richness, leaving a crisp and lingering aftertaste. Though I have known Hongjun for a short time, we have struck a chord. This brother often reveals his true nature when he laughs in foreign languages—he has an endearing, squinting, and naive demeanor, yet it never lacks a touch of earnestness and perseverance. Seeing his fan paintings, I was quite surprised; Hongjun usually appears neatly dressed and serious in daily life, yet I never suspected that beneath his surface, he also possesses such a Jiangnan-like spirit—serene yet charming.
