Features: Section IV: Epidemic Prevention and Control of Meat Dogs
Common diseases in meat dogs include infectious diseases, parasitic diseases, internal medicine diseases, surgical diseases, and obstetric diseases. Among these, infectious diseases are the most severe, followed by parasitic diseases. Raising meat dogs, especially in large-scale breeding facilities, often results in high dog density, leading to outbreaks of infectious and parasitic diseases, which significantly hinder the development of the dog breeding industry. Some dog diseases, such as rabies and leptospirosis, also directly threaten human health. To prevent and eliminate dog diseases, promote the development of the dog breeding industry, and ensure human health, it is essential to adhere to a prevention-first approach and implement a series of comprehensive prevention and control measures.
I. Comprehensive Prevention and Control Measures
1. Strengthen Feeding and Management
Adopt scientific dog breeding practices to enhance their general resistance to diseases. General resistance refers to the inherent disease-fighting ability of dogs, such as the bactericidal effects of the skin, mucous membranes, and saliva, as well as various non-specific antibodies in body fluids. It plays a crucial role in normal disease prevention. Improving general resistance requires scientific feeding and management and regular exercise.
2. Maintain Clean Dog Shelters
Many dog diseases are transmitted through feces, urine, and wastewater via the digestive tract or through contaminated air via the respiratory tract. Therefore, maintaining clean dog shelters helps prevent the occurrence of such infectious and parasitic diseases.
3. Strictly Implement Disinfection Measures
Disinfection is a vital measure for killing pathogenic microorganisms. Secretions (e.g., eye discharge, saliva, sputum) and excreta (e.g., feces, urine) of sick dogs often contain large amounts of pathogenic microorganisms. Some microbes have strong resistance and can persist in the external environment for extended periods, especially in soil, kennels, feeding and management tools, and even on the clothing and shoes of personnel who have been exposed to them. These become important vectors for transmitting infectious and parasitic diseases. Some non-pathogenic microorganisms may exist in healthy dogs, but when a dog's resistance is weakened due to certain factors, these microorganisms can become more virulent, causing the dog to become infected. Therefore, to prevent infectious diseases, all potentially contaminated items must undergo regular disinfection.
4. Strengthen Quarantine and Vaccination
To prevent the occurrence of infectious diseases, it is advisable to adopt an "in-house breeding" approach to avoid introducing diseases from external sources. Breeding facilities that import dogs from other regions must isolate newly arrived puppies from the existing dog population for one month. Only puppies free of infectious diseases may be introduced into the kennel. Additionally, dogs should be vaccinated with canine pentavalent vaccine or canine bivalent vaccine (for canine distemper and canine parvovirus) on schedule. Proper body disinfection should also be performed to prevent skin diseases and mite infestations.
5. Regular De-worming
Adult dogs should be checked every quarter, while young dogs should be checked monthly. If parasites or eggs are detected, medication should be administered at the therapeutic dosage. If no parasites or eggs are found, preventive medication should be given monthly.
6. Establish Health Records for Dog Groups
Dog caretakers should regularly monitor the health status of the dog group and maintain health records. Different preventive medications should be added to feed additives depending on the season. This helps prevent colds, diarrhea, and other internal diseases in dogs. If a dog group is found to be sick and suspected of having an infectious disease, veterinary professionals should be promptly consulted.
