Features: This textbook was compiled in accordance with the spirit of the "Teaching Syllabus for the History of Ancient Chinese Literature" issued by the Higher Education Department of the State Education Commission in July 1997, and is intended for use in Chinese language programs at universities. Its content includes the literary history of China before the Opium War and the works that students majoring in Chinese are required to read in depth. The literary history section is broadly divided into eight parts, each further subdivided into chapters, focusing on the main texts, literary schools, and important writers and works of each period, aiming to highlight the changes and developments in the characteristics of literature itself. For the works selected for in-depth reading, they are referenced as little as possible in the literary history discussions and are avoided from excessive repetition of content, so that the literary history can maintain a clear development line, making it easier for readers to grasp. The syllabus specifies the minimum reading volume for students majoring in Chinese ancient literature, which includes both in-depth reading works and reading works. The works selected in this textbook are the in-depth reading works stipulated in the syllabus. According to the requirements of the syllabus, "in-depth reading works are both the focus of teachers' lectures and the focus of students' learning and mastery," and students are required to achieve familiarity, understanding, and the ability to analyze. The term 'familiarity' includes both reading aloud and memorization. Works that are required to be memorized must be recited; for works that are not required to be memorized, students must have a detailed understanding of the specific content and famous quotes.
